Description
The Battle of Greasy Grass is a watercolor painting by Dean Wittle.
The Battle of the Greasy Grass, also known as the Battle of Little Bighorn, is an iconic event in American history. It took place on June 25-26, 1876, between the forces of the United States Army's Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lieutenant Colonel George Custer and a combined force of Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors led by various tribal leaders, most notably Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse.
The battle occurred in the Montana Territory, near the Little Bighorn River. Custer's intention was to defeat the Native American encampment and force them onto reservations to make way for American settlement. However, he underestimated the strength and determination of the Native American forces.
In a stunning turn of events, Custer's men were overwhelmed and suffered a devastating defeat. All of Custer's command was killed, making it one of the Army's worst losses in the Indian Wars. The battle remains a symbol of Native American resistance and a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for land and cultural rights. It serves as a reminder of the complex, often tragic encounters between indigenous peoples and European settlers during America's westward expansion.
